The SMART Board is an interactive tool that consists of 5 main components.

        1) SMART Board interactive white board

2) A computer that connects to the SMART board via USB cable

3) A projector that connects to the computer via VGA cable to project the computer screen to the     SMART board

4) SMART Notebook software

5) SMART Exchange website

The SMART Board, developed in 1991 by SMART Technologies, is the first interactive white board.

Visit SMART Technologies home page for more information: http://smarttech.com/

The SMART Board’s three main functionalities are:

 1)    Touch technology

  • Once your computer screen is projected onto the SMART Board, you can operate your computer through touch technology.
  • Use your hand or other writing tools to write, draw, erase and manipulate objects such as images or text boxes on the screen.
  • Operate your computer via the screen by using your hand or other writing tool to point and click on icons and links just like a left mouse button on your computer.
  • The SMART Board comes with a pen tray that holds pens that can be used as tools to write and click on the screen in a variety of colors. Should the pens become lost, they are replaceable by virtually any object of choice (i.e. tennis ball, ruler.)

2)    Writing and editing documents

  • Open documents or internet pages on the SMART Board.
  • Use the writing tools to write directly over a document or on an internet page.
  • Use the keyboard button on the pen tray to type into the document.

3)    Saving documents

  • Save changes made to a document directly from the SMART Board.
  • Use the image capture button to save a screen shot of your changes, such as notes written with the writing tools on a Word or Excel document.

SMART Notebook collaborative learning software:

 1)    Create lessons

  • Use the gallery to insert images, interactive pictures, maps, video and game-like simulations from a large collection
  • Download subject specific content upgrades (i.e., a math content upgrade including rulers, fraction generators, calculators and protractors)
  • Download free lessons from SMART Exchange, a website that contains hundreds of lessons and resources created by other teachers, educational publishers and SMART Technologies
  • Write and insert your original text
  • Insert images, documents, video and links from your files or the internet
  • Animate your images or text boxes to make your lesson even more interactive

2)    Deliver lessons

  • Use a variety of writing tools including pens, highlighters, shape recognizers, handwriting recognition, magnifiers, spotlight, and erasing throughout your lesson to enhance interactivity and meet your students needs
  • Control lesson delivery with a screen shade which will obscure part of lesson and touch activated progression to allow objects to enter one at a time
  • Save changes to lessons as you deliver them.

3)    Share lessons

  • Lessons can be saved directly onto your computer desktop or within your content menu in the SMART Notebook so that you can use your created or downloaded lessons an infinite number of times
  • Share lessons with other teachers by emailing them or uploading them to SMART Exchange or another SMART Board community

A subscription to SMART Notebook software is included with your classroom SMART Board.

As a preservice teacher, download the software for free for a 30 day trial period from:

This software is slightly different from the standard edition of SMART Notebook so be sure to research the differences before investing in the software.

Tools/Tips:

Orient the SMART Board
After hooking up your computer to the SMART Board each day, be sure to orient the SMART Board. Press and hold the keyboard and right mouse button on the pen tray. A series of targets with a red dot in the center will appear on the SMART Board. Place your finger in the center of the target to orient your SMART Board to your touch. If you ever find yourself having trouble selecting an object or have difficulty writing on the SMART Board, simply orient the SMART Board to solve the problem.

Always touch the tool you wish to use before touching the SMART Board.
This is a simple tip that is easy to forget when using the SMART Board. For example, if you are using a writing tool to write on the SMART Board and would then like to drag your text to another location, touch the mouse button before touching your text or your finger will continue to write on the page rather than moving the text.

Mouse
Use the mouse tool found in the top tool bar to move or select objects.

Pen Tray

The technology of both the pens and eraser are within the pen tray, not the tools. The tray recognizes when an object is removed from the tray and the user is then able to use the tool that corresponds with the empty slot. The user has the ability to use the tool or any other object (including their finger) to write/erase on the Smartboard (i.e. The user removes the pen from the red pen slot. The user can then use either the red pen, finger or any object to write in red on the Smartboard).

Pen

Use the pen to write with your finger or a writing tool. Select or remove one writing tool at a time from the pen tray and then your next touch on the screen will appear in the color of the pen you removed.

Convert your written text to typed text by using the mouse to touch written text and select the drop down menu in the top right corner. Then select “recognize as…” to activate the handwriting recognition tool.

Magic Pen
Use the magic pen (the pen with three stars around it) for three great features: disappearing ink, zoom and spotlight.

Disappearing ink- Write with the magic pen and your notes will begin to disappear after about 10 seconds.

Zoom- Draw a box around any object with the magic pen and the object you selected will be magnified. Be sure not to lift your finger or writing tool from the screen as you draw your box. To close, select the red button on the top right hand corner.

Spotlight- Draw a circle around any object with the magic pen and the object you selected will then appear in a spotlight. Be sure not to lift your finger or writing tool from the screen as you draw your circle. To enlarge or minimize the the spotlight, click the center of the spotlight and drag out to enlarge it or drag in to minimize it. To move the spotlight, click the spotlight outline and move to the desired area. To close, select the red button on the top right hand corner.

Creative Pen
Use the creative pen to write in a variety of fun styles such as stars or flowers.

Highlighter
Select the highlighter and move over text to highlight it.

Eraser
Use the eraser to erase any written text in your document with the eraser found in the pen tray or your hand. The eraser will not erase any typed text, images, shapes or lines.
If you would like to erase all the text written in a large area, simply draw a circle around all of the text with the eraser and then tap in the center of the circle.
If you would like to erase typed text, an image, etc., use the mouse to touch the object and then touch the drop down menu that will appear on the top right corner of the object. Then choose delete from the menu.

Line
Use the line to draw straight lines in your document.

Shape
Use the shape tool to insert a variety of shapes in your document. Shapes can be resized and rotated after they are inserted.

Shape Recognition
Select the shape recognition tool when you would like to draw a free hand shape. The tool will then recognize the shape you have drawn and will perfect it. This tool is especially great for drawing circles around objects or making circle maps.

Fill
Use the fill feature to add a background color or grade to your document or a text box.

Text Box
Use the text box to type text in your document. A keyboard will appear on the screen after you select this tool. Or, simply touch the keyboard button on the pen tray to activate this tool.

Editing/Rotating Objects
Use the mouse to touch an object or image. A box will appear around the object with a green circle on the top of the object and a drop down menu will appear on the top right corner. Use the green circle to rotate the object or touch the drop down menu for more editing options.

Gallery
Select the Gallery from the side bar. Then search the Notebook’s collection of images, audio, video, and game-like simulations. Drag the object to the document to insert.
Connect to SMART Exchange directly from the Gallery to insert previously created lessons and resources into your document.

Full Screen
Select the icon of the computer screen with four white corners to change your document from edit mode to full screen during lessons.

Screen Shot
Select the icon of the camera to take a screen shot image of your work throughout a lesson to save student work or notes.

Screen Shade
Select the icon of the pull down shade to cover the open page of a lesson. Then use the mouse to drag the screen up or down to reveal a portion of the page's content at a time. Touch the red circle in the top right corner to remove the screen.

Table
Insert a table by selecting the table icon. Use the mouse to scroll across the grid and choose the size table you would like to insert. You can then resize and rotate the table within the document.

Lock
Lock an object so that it cannot be moved during a lesson by touching the object with the mouse and choosing lock from the drop down menu on the top right corner. Objects may be unlocked at anytime.

Grouping
All objects inserted in SMART Notebook are considered separate. For example, if you insert a picture of a house and then write the text house underneath the image, both image and text can be moved individually. This is not always ideal. In order to treat several objects as one, group them together. Use the mouse to draw a box around all objects that you would like to group. Once all objects are selected, open the drop down menu on one of the objects and choose Grouping and then Group. The selected objects will now be considered one object. To Ungroup follow the same process.

Clone
To duplicate any object, touch the object with the mouse and choose the clone option from the drop down menu on the top right corner.

Infinite Cloner

This function allows you to infinitely duplicate any item or object you choose. For example, if you were teaching a money lesson you could make the coins 'infinite cloners' so that the students could use however many coins they want to add up to a certain value that the teacher chooses. This is better than having a preset amount of coins for the student to choose from. To make an object an infinite cloner simply click on the object with the mouse and click on the drop down arrow on the top right corner of the object. Look down toward the bottom of this drop down menu and click on infinite cloner.

Animate
To animate an object, touch the object with the mouse and chose the Properties option from the drop down menu. You may then chose to add a fill color, animate an object, etc.

Some ways SMART Boards can add value to your classroom are:

1) Provide interactivity for students

2) Accommodate visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners

3) Allow students to interact with each other

4) Put students’ learning into their own hands

5) Keep students’ attention

6) Induce curiosity and motivate students to participate

7) Elicit critical thinking skills

8) Incorporate valuable learning resources beyond school texts, including other great technologies such as Google Earth

Classroom Applications:

The SMART Board is more than just a way to display PowerPoint presentations and YouTube videos with ease. The following are just a few examples of how to use the SMART Board to add value to your lessons.

  • For a second grade science lesson, easily create a small group activity in which students sort real photographs of sea life into the appropriate levels of the ocean and include animated self-correction tools!
  • For a sixth grade math lesson, download a lesson from SMART exchange that allows students to manipulate shapes to determine how area is calculated!
  • For a kindergarten reading lesson, create an interactive phonics activity in which students can hear the phonemes in a word and sort them into the appropriate whirling vortex!

This is just a beginning! Once you put the interactive SMART Board in the hands of your students, anything becomes possible!

Online Programs for the Smartboard:
