What is Scratch?

Scratch is a design program that can be used to create interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art.  

 

Why Use Scratch?

  • The program is completely free

 

  • Teachers can create a class link, for students to share their projects and receive feedback from fellow classmates

 

  • Scratch promotes 21st Century Learning skills

 

  • The Scratch program interface and programming language have been designed so that even children in Kindergarten can successfully use and create projects using the Scratch program
  • Students have access to their projects 24/7      

 

How to get started:

  1. Visit the Scratch Website @ http://scratch.mit.edu 

     

  2. Sign-up for a Scratch account
  3. Download the scatch program 
  4. Next you will want to visit this site:  http://scratched.media.mit.edu/ This is the Scratch Educators site, you will find tons of links to assessment rubrics, lesson plan ideas, disscusion groups about Scratch in the classroom, and many other resources

After you have viewed and experimented enough that you are convinced that Scratch is worth trying in your classroom, you and your class can visit this website: http://need2learn.net/course/view.php?id=95 sign-up and participate in a moodle course for students to learn Scratch, this moodle course offers quizzes and journal reflection opportunities so that you can easily assess their understanding and level of excitement about using Scratch before you assign any projects on Scratch
